The Tioga Velo Club originally started out as the Tioga Time Trial Club ( I'm taking an editorial liberty here - I will check and confirm this with some of the old timers and verify - jd
) and eventually morphed into the Tioga Velo Club that it is today.
As the club grew, so to did the diversity of riding styles and
skill sets within the ranks of the membership. The riders wanted
to do more than time trial. Thus - some road courses and circuit
style races were added to the schedule. Some have stayed the
course over the years and become club staples, while others have come
and gone (for various reasons - safety, roads don't exist anymore,
popularity with the membership, etc.... ). The club consistently
has a diverse range of challenging courses - some to suit the climbers,
the sprinters, the time trialists, and for the good over all cyclist -
all of the available courses. The club has, in recent years,
adopted a policy of swapping evenings for the types of races offered to
adopt to various training needs of the membership. This has been
a long standing thorn in the officers side every year at the start of
the season - the "real racers" (USCF types who race on weekends)
frequently like to have one schedule, while the "club racers and/or
tri-types" like to have another schedule... so it was decided a few
years ago that the Tuesday / Thursday scheduling would flip flop every
year in an effort to keep everyone as happy as could be. One
group of riders may like a particular seasons schedule better than the
next, but the other group will have thier preferred schedule the
following season. You can't please everyone all of the time...
but we try!
With that little bit of history out of the way, you'll now understand
why I can't say that "The Thursday evening time trial courses are
this... " and "The Tuesday evening road courses are that... " The
following list of courses will therefore simply be prefaced with a TT
or RR designation. Refer to the current season calendar /
schedule to figure out if a given race or races that you would like to
attend is on a Tuesday or Thursday evening.
West Creek Road Race
To get there, take the second Owego exit (if your heading west on rt
17) and follow the signs to Route 38. Proceed north and the County DSS
parking lot is across from Harvard Custom Manufacturing.
Staging for the race will be on Depot Rd. Just ride up 38 (heading
north). You'll see West Creek Road on your left. Turn left and Depot
St. is on the right once you cross the railroad tracks. Parking
for West Creek Road Race is the same as the for Rt 38 Time Trial - Park
at the Tioga County Social Services lot.
Tracy Creek Time Trial / Hill Climb
Head west on Rt. 434 from "Four Corners" in Vestal (the old Grand
Union). About 2 miles down, bear left off of Rt.434 onto
Owego Rd (or alternately about .5 miles later turn hard left onto
Arlington Rd.). Park at the abandoned Dollar Store in Ross
Corners, at the intersection of Owego Rd, Arlington Rd, and Tracy Creek
Rd. The course runs up Tracy Creek Rd, left onto Underwood Rd,
left onto Ridge Rd, and finishes about .25 miles up Ridge Rd.

McLean Hill Rd
... is the second of our three September hill climb TTs. Parking
is the same as for Rt.38 TT and West Creek RR (park at the new jail due
to construction at the Social Building). McLean Hill Rd is the
first right as you head up Rt. 38, with the course running the length
of McLean Hill Rd. While the TT is only about 2.3 miles, it
features a "wall" in the middle that I have previously marked as 1km at
8.4%.... but it is more like .5 miles at 10%, with a final kick of 13%
before it "flattens out." Click here for course profile.
Underwood Rd. Hill Climb
Only 1.8 miles, "no problem" you say? Did we tell you that the
"not so easy" side of Underwood is 1.1 miles of hill averaging 10.5%,
and ending with a final insult at around 19%. And after that you
still have another half mile or so to get to the finish line! To
get there, head south on Rt. 26 out of Vestal until almost the PA line
(about 6 miles). Look for sign to the Observatory and turn right
(onto Castleman Rd). In 50 yds turn left and immediately
park on Underwood Rd. That is the start line. Like the U.S.
Postal Service, we finish at the mailbox (of the Observatory).

Greenwood Park Road Race
To get there take
rt. 26 from Endicott go through town of Maine and bear left on Nanticoke Road
just after Maine Memorial School. Stay on Nanticoke for around 6-8 more
miles and turn left on Greenwood Road and follow signs to park.
Route 369 Road Race
The 369 race starts at the fishing area in Port Crane, right at the
exit off I-88. So going from BGM towards Albany, get off at Port
Crane (Rt. 369) and turn left at the bottom of the ramp, go about 200
yds under I-88 and the parking area is on the left.
